Plan9

Some day, maybe aliens really will land on Earth, turn the dead into zombies, and vindicate much-maligned director Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space.  But in the meantime, lazy critics continue to cite Plan 9 as “the worst film of all time.”  But I happen to know this simply isn’t true.

Back in the early 1970s, two buddies and I somehow convinced my poor mother to drive her car (none of us boys were old enough to drive) into the local cemetery in the dead of night, and then shine the headlights onto tombstones so that we three idiots could film an 8mm vampire movie.  Somebody called the cops, and my mother was forced to explain the ridiculous situation to an officer.  Tragically, that film footage has been lost, but I’m quite certain that had it survived, it would have rivaled Plan 9 for sheer awfulness.

What went wrong for director Wood during the filming of this 1956 (1959? — even my reference books show no respect, disagreeing on the production year) “masterpiece” is legend.  Star Bela Lugosi died early on and was replaced by a man who covered his face with a cape.  The special effects budget was, shall we say, substandard.  But hey, this movie has TV goddess Vampira and pro wrestling legend Tor Johnson.  Watch it for free (you wouldn’t pay for it) by clicking on the link below.

Sports agents are jerks.  But you knew that.  Professional athletes are pampered brats.  You knew that, too.  Tom Cruise might or might not be an arrogant weirdo, judging from media reports.  So why is this 1996 movie starring Cruise, about pro jocks and their agents, so addictive?  Somehow, writer-director Cameron Crowe takes these flawed personalities, throws them all together, and comes up with a modern-day Frank Capra movie.

Fright1

Lots of movies try to mix humor with horror, but not very many of them get the recipe right.  Fright Night, from 1985, is an exception.  Chris Sarandon oozes menace and charm as the vampire next door, and veteran Roddy McDowall is a hoot as a TV horror-movie host turned reluctant Van Helsing.

1964 was quite the year for doomsday aficionados.  Moviegoers had their choice of two ways to witness the end of the world:  They could bite their nails off watching the bombs fall in Fail-Safe, or sit back and laugh about it with Dr. Strangelove.  See Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy starring the great Peter Sellers for free by going here.

Cat1

Poor Jane Fonda.  1965’s Cat Ballou was supposed to be a star vehicle for Henry Fonda’s daughter but, although she’s very good in the comedy, upstart Lee Marvin wound up stealing the show (and an Oscar) with his portrayal of a drunken ex-gunslinger.  Then, adding insult to injury, Jane’s ad campaign was apparently run by the sexist gang from AMC’s Mad Men.  Check out the poster pictured below.  Then watch the movie free of charge by going here.

Thunderbolt

In 1974, Clint Eastwood was fresh off the success of Dirty Harry, not to mention all those spaghetti Westerns he starred in.  Jeff Bridges was … well, the son of that guy who starred in Sea Hunt on TV.  Inexplicably, Eastwood was paired with Bridges for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, an out-of-nowhere comedy-drama about a thief (Eastwood) teaming up with a drifter (Bridges) to locate some hidden loot.  So guess who steals the movie?  Watch it free by going  here.

Dead Zone

Most Stephen King books make lousy movies (come to think of it, most Stephen King books in recent years aren’t so hot, either).  But there are exceptions.  The Shawshank Redemption comes to mind.  And this film, director David Cronenberg’s chiller from 1983.  Watch it free by going here.

Charade

In 1963, the greatest male movie star of them all had only three films left to make. Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant’s match in charm and grace, would retire in four more years.  To watch these legends (free) in their only teaming — and in what might be the best Hitchcock movie not directed by Hitchcock —  click here.

Vanishes

I’ve been visiting The Internet Movie Database for years, but only recently did I discover the wealth of free movies on the site.  The bad news?  If you can’t stomach “old,” black-and-white flicks, there isn’t much for you.  The good news, of course, is that there’s a lot for the rest of us.  If you like Hitchcock, and if North by Northwest whets your whistle, check out The Lady Vanishes, which is playful Hitchcock from 1938 that shows that the master was on his game well before David Selznick lured him to Hollywood.  Go here and watch it free.
